We are all Connected.. by the Tenuous Thread of Music

Just the other day I was watching a You Tube video on UK’s got talent where this bar maid belts out oh so powerfully,  Whitney Houston’s ‘One Moment in Time”. Apart from being a favorite of mine from childhood, the way she sang gave me goosebumps. So serenely yet with so much power, hitting all the right notes and actually feeling the lyrics. Her rendition was was mesmerizing in the senses that it literally, for that 2 minutes, made me feel like anything is possible, like I could conquer the world. That’s the power of Feelings and emotions. Music is hands down one of the best ways for feelings to get life.

"Feelings, nothing more than feelings…" sang Morris Albert in 1975... yeah, even before I was born. What is it about the volatility of our feelings? Why do feelings rule supreme over us all the time? A lot of people profess to be realists and practical thinkers but, methinks, feelings and emotion govern every single thought, deed, and decision.

Have you ever listened to a song, and gone, “whoa that’s exactly how I feel right now”? Whether it’s a sad song talking about heartbreak (always a favorite), a peppy rhythm  that perks your day up, a hip-hop beat that breaks the monotony of your day, or a slow jazz number to calm down frazzled nerves – it moves our soul, it touches you in places you never knew existed.

Many a time, when we go through a situation, we think no one else has gone through that. We feel isolated by our feelings, on one hand, yet oddly jubilant in a twisted way. Maybe we all like to think that we can face challenges with bravery we don’t always feel. What we may fail to realize is that music unites us. Music has MAGIC in it, and in this magic lies the invisible bond that ties us to everyone else in the world.

No matter what color our skin, or eyes or hair, no matter if we are poor or rich, perhaps it will help to realize that everyone goes through ups-and-downs in life. But what is most important is that "this too shall pass."
